International Night - WOW!

Good morning,
While I'm sure the buzz our International Night will continue for quite some time, I needed to share that last night's event stands out for me as the best International Night ever at King.  Everything seemed to come together last night in a perfect way - perfect performances, families being together, a rich sharing of culture.  There was happiness in the air last night!
The list of thank yous to pull off an event of last night's magnitude is long.  I'm sure I can't  tell you everyone who was involved, but I can tell you there is one person who makes this event happen more than anyone:  Frances Kai-Wang.

Frances - your energy and commitment to King's International Night is inspriing.  On behalf of the King School community, thank you for your continued dedication to organizing and running International Night.  You've made this "best night at King School" happen for seven years running and after talking to you last night I'm already looking forward to next year's "main event!"

King School International Night coming Thursday, February 10, 6:30 - 8:30

International Night is an incredible evening of pride and celebration for the King School Community. We begin with an International Potluck of delectable dishes from around the world. Then we have a Showcase of Student Performances (325 students last year!)—such as Arabic Debkeh Dance, Israeli folk dance, Korean Tae Kwon Do, Bolivian Dance, Dutch song, Thai dulcimer, American Hip-Hop, Indian bhangra dance, Chinese fan dance, and more! We also decorate the hallways with informational Country Displays and art projects for a World Tour. We are also always open to new innovative ideas! 

Country Posters: For those who would like to be a part, everyone is invited to make a country poster to teach about a special country or culture that you like! This is a great family project. Posters will be displayed for two weeks before and after International Night. Posters must be flat and able to be taped to the wall. Photos are great! Creativity encouraged! Celebrations of achievements of Americans of that ethnic heritage appreciated by the kids! Maps are cool, but no flags please. King School International Night Performance Signups NOW

Performances: Signups for King School International Night (Thurs Feb. 10) performances are underway! Please email Frances fkwang AT aol DOT com if you would like to participate. Reminders: all performances must be under 3 minutes! Music must be prerecorded on CD. Colorful costumes a plus! Dance, music, poetry, song, more (be creative!) encouraged. Parents and siblings and friends welcome to perform together. With Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays looming, practices must begin ASAP! There are video recordings of previous years' performances in the library if you need ideas of what to expect. Remind fifth graders that this is their last chance!

Coins and Red Envelopes: For anyone traveling abroad over the holidays: Please bring back small coins for us to include in the children's red envelopes! The more countries' coins we have the better! (and any other sort of small flat knick-knacks like stickers) We also need 300 red envelopes if anyone is going to China or Taiwan at Christmas time.

International Night Procedures

Dear MLK Families,

The PTO's Annual International Night will begin at 6:30 on February 5! This is one of the premier events each year at MLK. I hope to see you there! Because this event is typically attended by over 800 people, it is important to review the following information:

1. Evening activities at King are family events. Parents and guardians are responsible for the close supervision of their children. Children cannot attend without a supervising adult.
2. Be aware of the evening safety procedures at MLK--including NO PARKING IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING.


Parking
Due to the limited availability of parking at King, parents should plan to park in the neighborhood during all evening events at King.
There is NO PARKING in front of the school, by the fire hydrant, or on the left-hand side of the front circular drive.

Reason: The front drive is a fire lane and must be kept accessible for emergency vehicles. The fire hydrant area must also be kept clear.

Drop Off/Pick Up
The front entrance will be available for drop off and pick up ONLY. AT NO TIME SHOULD PARKING OCCUR IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL.

NOTES: Parents must be responsible for and with their children at ALL times. Please remind children no running wild through the hallways and to be respectful during performances. Also, we have more students performing this year than ever before! Please be prompt, nice, and patient as it will be hot, noisy, crowded, chaotic, FUN, and we may run a little late. If your child cannot eat when excited, please feed before you come (or bring a healthy snack). Please also remember to allow for ample time to find parking and NO PARKING on either side of the circular drive.

PLEASE PLAN AHEAD TO AVOID GRUMPINESS.

Performers’ parents: If your child is performing, please feed and dress and do hair and makeup at home before you come, know where and when to meet your group leaders, and bring a healthy snack for afterwards. Prepare everything you need the night before to avoid last minute chaos.

Performance leaders: Make sure your groups practice entering the stage (ramp side), bowing, and exiting the stage (parking lot side). Must be fast! Have 1-2 parents assigned/stationed to help get kids on stage (ramp side) and off stage (parking lot side), and have a plan about where and when to meet before and afterwards. Afterwards is important to return them to their parents. Groups should report to the stage two acts before theirs. Remind children to be quiet and courteous and not wild while waiting in the wings. Get your music on CD to Mrs. Vanek NOW!

We're expecting to feed 1000 people--we need all hands to make the feast portion go smoothly. If you want to be a part but don't know what to do, help with the feast. It's easy and flexible and day-of. And yes of course you can take a (short) break to go see your kids perform.

Feast, Feast, Feast, Feast

A delicious part of King School's International Night is the potluck or "Feast". Attendees are to bring a dish from their cultural heritage that will serve 18 people (large quantities needed). Your dish can be an appetizer, salad, noodles, main course, dessert or any other culinary endeavor. You may recall that each dish must have a label card: name, ethnic region and boxes checked for any of the 12 common food allergies. NO NUTS, PLEASE.

In order to save copying costs, food label cards will NOT go home in student folders. You can pick up cards ahead of time in the school office and there will be food cards available on International Night, February 5th. Please label any dishes or serving ware that you would like to keep.

Food lines will open at 6:30 pm and performers will have first priority. Beverages include water (free from the PTO thermos) or juice boxes (price to be determined). Food lovers this is your night!

We anticipate over 600 diners, so anyone willing to volunteer for a 30 minute job, please contact Lisa Kohn: lkohn@umich.edu

King International Night Country Displays

For those who would like to be a part of King International Night (Thursday, February 5, 6:30-8:30), but do not have time or ability to perform, we invite you to make an informational poster about any country or culture (or one aspect of a culture, like food or song or language) to hang on the walls for two weeks prior to the event. This gives our students another way to learn about the many countries and cultures around us. This is a great family project for over the holidays! Be creative! Be colorful! Photos and graphics and maps are good. Posters must be able to be hung on the wall (so no table-top displays like dolls). Posters from previous years may be reused. Please, no flags or politics.

Indian Group Performance And Practice Schedule

All King students are welcome to participate in the Indian group performance for International Night. We will practice on Wednesdays and Fridays in the King multi-purpose room. (See schedule below.) King International Night 2009! - Planning Info

Attention All King Families! International Night 2009 planning starts now! Please think of International Night this summer, while you are off on all your family vacations, business trips, and adventures around the world. Coordinate with your team to have someone bring back costumes or music or accoutrements for next year's performances. Also bring back all your spare change (or a big bag of penny equivalents)! I would love to be able to give the kids a sampling of coins from around the world in their red envelopes again.

The 2008 International Night video DVD and Photo DVD will be available in the library for check out, sorry so late this year, you should be able to borrow it in the fall...

International Night a HUGE Success!

Thanks to everyone in the King Community for making International Night such a great success (again)!

The snow held off, 1000 or so people ate an incredible gourmet meal, 300+ kids learned and performed 24 music/dance/martial arts acts representing 20 cultures from around the world, the technical and logistical details held together, everyone pitched in and helped where needed, and we even finished 4 minutes ahead of schedule! It was crowded and hot and chaotic and wonderful, but I hope you all felt it was worth it. We will see the real results in the weeks and months to come in terms of individual growth, school spirit, and community pride. (Did you notice how many middle school alums chose to come back for this event?)

Dear King Families,

I’m looking forward to International Night at King School this Thursday from 6:30 – 8:30. I’m hoping that you will make time to attend also. It is truly one of the hallmark events on the King School calendar. I am particularly proud of our International Night Committee, who deserves many thanks for all of the planning and work that has gone into this wonderful event.

Please keep in mind that evening activities at King are family events. Parents and guardians are responsible for the supervision of their children. This means children cannot attend without a supervising adult. I have also reminded children that acceptable behavior at evening school events is the same as acceptable behavior during the school day. Thank you for your support.

Most importantly, I want to remind you about safety procedures for evening events at King. This is especially important when considering our typically high attendance at International Night. Please review the information sent home on Tuesday, February 28. In particular, please do NOT park in the front of King School. This area needs to be left open in case of emergency.

WOW!!! We are 1.5 weeks away from King School's fabulous International Night! Remember!

Thursday, January 31, 6:30-8:30. (and maybe a little later)

(If you are performing or working, plan to get there no later than 6pm or whatever time your team leader tells you to be there. Some teams start work when school gets out at 3:41).

NEEDED: COUNTRY DISPLAYS

If you have a country display or would like to make one, please bring it to the office this week and we will hang them on the walls so the kids can take their time looking at them and learning from them! Be as creative as you want to be. We are looking for wider representation and political balance. Please remember no flags. PERFORMANCES: Attached is a program draft, please check the info there, esp the names, and send me any missing/incorrect info! Team Leaders: Please read all the names, not only the names in your group, to double check the kids who are in other groups and let me know about kids who are double booked that may not have enough time to change clothes. I think i have everyone spread out enough but i may have missed a few people. Thanks!

The order is tentative and will still change.

Please give your music on CD to Mrs. Vanek by Thursday 1/24 so she can burn one cd (this is new).

Remember:

3 minutes max,

enter from ramp side, exit from parking lot side,

practice your bows,

have parents assigned for both sides of the stage to help get the kids on and off stage,

tell your performers when to meet (you can meet in the music room, but don't keep them there all night),

feed your performing kids before you come,

music must be on cd to mrs. vanek by Thursday 1/24

Remember time is very tight so speedy entrances and exits are key!

FEAST COMMITTEE:

Contact the Feast Committee Chair Lisa Kohn, lkohn@umich.edu, 662-1601! Entails set up, clean up, trash patrol, serving food, greeting people, decorations, etc. Mostly day of event, 3:00-9:00. If you pick up your kids after school, consider helping with the initial set up right when school gets out at 3:41. We need all hands!

TECH TEAM:

If you signed up for the Tech Team, Chair Kun Yang, yk523@yahoo.com, 222-9497, will contact you soon. Entails set up of video equipment for simulcast and recording, manage and set up microphones system, making DVD of performances. Mostly day of event, 3:30-9:00. If you are technically minded and want to be a part, contact Kun now!

Entails helping stuff red envelopes, passing out red envelopes, helping get kids on and off stage, cleaning stage before last song. Some prep work, mostly night of event, 6:30-8:30. Easy!
