Earlier this school year, Rachel Sabb, the PTO Community Action chair, wrote to families asking for Thanksgiving donations for needy families in our community. Later, many teachers followed up with emails. The result of all of this wonderful effort is that turkeys and grocery gift cards are being provided for needy families in our community! In fact, we actually collected more than was needed for the gift cards. The "extra" will be used to support additional community action projects including the upcoming snowman gifts in December.
Thank you, King Community (families as well as King teachers and staff), for your giving especially in these toughest of times! It means so much to those who receive, and it will certainly help make their Thanksgiving better.

Donate Your Jeans!
Join the MLK PTO to work with DoSomething.org to collect gently worn jeans to donate to homeless children across the United States and Canada. All sizes of jeans will be accepted. Sorry, we can only accept jeans without holes right now.

Jump Rope For Heart - 2/13
Mrs. Arbour, our wonderful physical education teacher, has again organized students to participate in Jump Rope For Heart.

Jump Rope For Heart is a national educational fund-raising program that is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).

While participating at King, this program engages our students in a physical activity (jumping rope) with an option for raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research. Students can ask friends and family for donations if parents feel it is OK. Either way, all students participate in physical fitness and better understand the value of community service.
This year's event will take place on February 13! I can't wait to see everyone jumping!

This is an annual event to help children in our community enjoy the holiday season with a donated gifts from King families.
What you do to help:
1. Take a snowman (or more) located on the bulletin board between the school office and the parking lot entrance doors
2. Purchase the gift written on the back of the tag
3. Return the gift and the snowman to the King School office UNWRAPPED before December 19. If appropriate, please attach the gift receipts.
RETURN GIFTS TO THE KING OFFICE NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 19 (sooner is better :-).

Family Immunization Program
**Special School Immunization Walk-in Clinic on Monday, November 10 from 4 - 6pm at Pioneer High School**
Clinic is only for children through age 18 years of age
Regular immunization fees will be charged
We are not able to bill private insurance but will provide a receipt
Vaccine For Children (VFC) eligible children will not be charged
No varicella (chickenpox) vaccine is available at this clinic

Community Action News
Each year the King PTO's Community Action chairperson works to implement several programs at King School to bring greater awareness to others. With this, there are also opportunities for King families to help others.
For our first activity of the year, King school students will be participating in the UNICEF coin collection drive on Halloween again. UNICEF boxes have been ordered and will be distributed to students toward the end of October. For more information about UNICEF visit www.unicef.org
We have been collecting a list of 'much needed items' for King School families that are financially struggling this year. If you can help with a donation or the purchase of an item, please contact Susan Aaronson, susaaaro@umich.edu . If you have a middle school student who is selling magazines and you would like to find out more about donating educational magazines to families and community centers that are in need, please also contact Susan.
Our PTO plans to continue with the winter coat drive and community snowflake gift giving campaign in December. We will be working with the Student Council to coordinate other community service activities.
Last year, Community Action encouraged classrooms to raise money for Pennies for Peace - building schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Students also collected change and donations for disaster relief in China and Myanmar. This money was donated to Save the Children. We organized our annual winter coat, hat and mitten drive and donated items to House by the Side of the Road. King school families donated over 100 gifts to community families in need at the holidays through our annual Snowflake giving campaign. Our students collected change during the week surrounding Halloween and we donated over $400 to UNICEF. We have a wonderfully generous community and we thank you all for your contributions. Please send Susan any feedback on how better to support both our local and global community in need.

King Students Donate Change

Congratulations to all of the students and their families who generously donated $840.00 to disaster relief in Burma and China! In four short days, our students emptied their piggy banks, sold popsicles and juice at the Memorial Day parade and encouraged their parents to help. After the remaining coins trickle in, a final check will be written from King school to Save the Children. Great job boys and girls! You should be very proud of your efforts.

Coin Drive for hurricane and earthquake victims

TENS OF THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY CYCLONE NARGI IN MYANMAR AND THE EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHWESTERN CHINA’S SICHUAN PROVINCE
Our King Community has many families with ties to Asia and we are excited to present an opportunity for our children and parents to donate. Each classroom will have an empty milk jug for coin donations. Our children can feel like they are helping by donating spare change or organizing neighborhood fund raisers (pulling weeds, lemonade stands, or pet walking). There will also be a milk jug in the main office for those parents that would like to send a separate donation. The PTO is currently looking into a reputable organization that has the ability to help families in both countries.
Think of the possibilities:
One quarter per student = >$100
This is the perfect opportunity to rid your house of pennies!

Free e-Waste Recycling - May 10
2nd Annual Free e-Waste Recycling Event
Saturday, May 10, 9a.m. - 2p.m.
Pioneer High School Parking Lot
The Ann Arbor Public Schools and the Climate Savers Computing Initiative@the University of Michigan are co-sponsoring a free e-waste recycling event for the community in cooperation with Apple Computers.
-Save our land and water systems and responsibly recycle your personal electronics
-Protect the environment- Keep electronic equipment out of landfills
-Conserve natural resources- Materials in your electronics are highly reusable
Unload old or unused:
Computer systems, speakers, monitors, printers, telephone/cell phones, wires/cables, televisions, modems.
For a complete list of materials, go to climatesavers.umich.edu/e-waste.
All e-waste will be destroyed and recycled in the United States using an environmentally sound manner by an Environment Protection Agency-certified company courtesy of Apple Inc.
This event is for personal electronic equipment only. Last year, over 700 cars drove through the line!
Earth Week and Spring Clean Up
Earth Week and Spring Clean-up
I was literally blown away by the King students and classroom teachers' ENTHUSIASM during Earth Week! My heart was filled with inexpressable joy as I saw landscaping feats occurring all over the place, and even in the untidy courtyards that I can never manage to tame on my own. I elected to work with 3 classes sowing seed in the areas damaged by snow removal equipment. Mrs. Shaffer's first grade, Mrs. Gracey's third grade and Mr. Huyck's third grade worked incredibly hard to haul dirt, rake it out, seed the area, then cover the seed with more dirt and straw. Pray for rain and we'll have grass!
My projects weren't the only bill of affairs...
Dr. Mihalik's class cleaned the woods and area north of the parking lot. this was a huge, messy eye sore. Thank you fifth graders! They also weighed in trash and recyclables all day on Earth Day to see which one weighed more. Ask them if you get a chance. I'm curious, too.
Mrs. Lake's class also took the trash vs. recyclable challenge. What did they discover?
Mrs. Knorr's class raked, pulled weeds and scoured Megan's courtyard, collecting over 4 bags of yard waste.
Mrs. Shafie and Mr. Petty's classes raked and equally scoured Dorothy's natural courtyard. The bird bath is filled, the window cubbies have been swept!
Thank you King classes for your willing participation. Doesn't our school look so much better?!!!!! Please let me know what other classes did that I failed to mention.
Spring Clean-up happened even with our small, hard working crew. Saturday Ellen Hopkins, Ravi and Sushruta Shankar and Linda Ryan weeded all the flower beds and removed leaves from the west entry ground cover. Thank you mighty souls!
Late Saturday the mulch arrived and the mountain was partially depleted. Shan, Brian, and Rhea Cong along with my family, Carl, Rebecca, Catherine and me hauled mulch to dress up the flower beds. Much thanks to the Congs. Family power really makes a difference.
There is still mulch to be hauled.

Jump Rope For Heart Success!
This year, through the efforts of Mrs. Arbour and MLK families and students, King School raised over $8000 for Jump Rope For Heart. You'll remember that last school year, King School was recognized as the most improved school in Michigan after improving 525% from 2005-06 to 2006-07. Nice job, everyone!
