Summertime Tips From the Media Center

I'll miss all the kids this summer, but I'm SURE they'll want to keep on reading!  Here are some ideas and suggestions that will help you keep both fun and progress in your child's reading life:

Check out Ann Arbor Public Library's Summer Reading program.  They do a fantastic job of organizing fun things for kids.

Don't forget our very own Media Center web site when you're looking for book ideas, parenting tips, and appropriate online games.  The URL ishttp://king.a2schools.org/king.mediacenter/home .

One of my favorite sites for book titles is Read Kiddo Read,http://www.readkiddoread.com/home .

And a link to a really in-depth list can be found here:http://www.haisln.org/recommendedreadinglists.html .

And the best advice?  Follow your kids' interests and surround them with print of all kinds.  Comics, graphic novels, magazines, nonfiction, series, read-alouds...ALL of these are great and lead to better and better reading.  Keep reading aloud to them through the intermediate grades if you can--it builds vocabulary and makes for great family memories.

Have a safe and wonderful summer,
Mrs. O'Keefe

Ice Cream Social Reminders

Dear King Families,

I am looking forward to the ice cream social this evening.  I hope you'll be able to attend--rain or shine--beginning at 6 PM.

Retirees:  We have three four teachers retiring from King School this year:  Mr. Michalik, Dr. Michalik, Ms. Lake, and Mrs. Shafie.  I hope you will join me in making them the guests of honor at the social from 6 - 7 PM.

Parking:  As always, no parking in the front of King School.  The front drive is for drop-off only. Please plan to park on Waldenwood Drive.

Safety:  1.  In case of severe weather, either move inside the school to an area away from windows (music room, interior corridors, bathrooms.
2.  I am asking parents watch children carefully this evening.  Last year, non-King student behavior was unruly, and it resulted in a King student being hurt.  Thank you.

See you tonight!

Kevin

P.S. As a polite reminder, please wear Maize and Blue to the social tonight.  I am aware there are some renegades among us.  In particular, they root for schools like Ohio State, Oregon, Northwestern, Auburn and Notre Who.  They are saying they will wear whatever school colors THEY choose.  The only thing I can say:  If you wanted to wear your colors, you should have stepped up and donated more money at the silent auction!  However, the PTO is still happy to receive your check tonight.  ;-)

Ice Cream Social - Friday, June 11 from 6 - 8

The King School Ice Cream Social is this Friday from 6 - 8 PM.

WEAR MAIZE AND BLUE!
As a result of the money donated at the silent auction fundraiser, please remember everyone must wear wear maize and blue at the ice cream social. This includes fans who root for Ohio State, Michigan State, and similar lesser universities.

FAMILY EVENT
As always, the ice cream social is a family event. Children cannot be dropped off without parents. I hope every family will be able to attend!

Sincerely,
Kevin

Space Camp for 2010-11?

Hello 2009-10 Fourth Grade Parents,

Many people have been asking if 5th grade will be continuing the
tradition of going to Space Camp in 2010-11, and the answer to that question is an
enthusiastic YES. We will continue the tradition as long as parents make
the decision to go. However, to continue, the students and teachers
will need your support and help.

In order to go to Space Camp, parents will need to form a planning
committee to ensure we are on track to raise the required funds and take
care of organizational matters.

Please let me know if you are willing to be on the committee or to head
the committee. Parent support and help is key in making this trip
happen. You may contact me at haddas@aaps.k12.mi.us. Also, please feel
free to contact myself or Kevin Karr if you would like to express an
opinion regarding our trip.

I look forward to working with you and your children next year,

Karen Haddas

Rodney from Wildlife Services visited King School today after a small raccoon decided the nap and relax right by the front door--where the kids walk out at the end of the school day!

Here is a picture of our raccoon who was taken away by Rodney from Wildlife Services. Thanks for your help Rodney!

We need YOU for the King PTO!

We are looking for volunteers to be President and Vice President of the King PTO for the 2010-2011 school year. Be a part of the amazing organization that provides numerous enrichment activities for our children, funds field trips, supports our teachers through mini-grants, engages the community in fun events throughout the year, and much, much more!

Please consider taking on a more active role in the King PTO. Grab a friend & be Co-Presidents or Co-Vice Presidents. The King PTO can NOT exist without these positions being filled.

For more information, to explore the possibility of being President, Vice President, or to say, "YES...SIGN ME UP!", contact kingpto@gmail.com.

Thank you. The future of the PTO is in your hands.

The King Ice Cream Social is only a week away!  The Doodle website is up and running.  Please sign up and help as this event requires many volunteers.  You should have received an email from your classroom rep (except for the 4th graders  - since they will be in charge of selling pizza & pop).  Each grade has their own Doodle site for their games.

Please go to this Doodle site for volunteering for setup, cleanup, cakewalk, and driveway monitor:
