Ice Cream Social Procedures

Dear MLK Families,

The PTO's Annual Ice Cream Social will begin at 6:00 PM tonight! This is a wonderfully fun social event for the whole family! I hope you'll make time to be there. Because this event is typically attended by nearly 1000 people, it is important to review the following information:

1. Evening activities at King are family events. Parents and guardians are responsible for the close supervision of their children. Children cannot attend without a supervising adult.
2. Be aware of the evening safety procedures at MLK--including NO PARKING IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING.


Parking
Due to the limited availability of parking at King, parents should plan to park in the neighborhood during all evening events at King.
There is NO PARKING in front of the school, by the fire hydrant, or on the left-hand side of the front circular drive.

Reason: The front drive is a fire lane and must be kept accessible for emergency vehicles. The fire hydrant area must also be kept clear.

Drop Off/Pick Up
The front entrance will be available for drop off and pick up ONLY. AT NO TIME SHOULD PARKING OCCUR IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL.

Severe Weather
In case of severe weather and a need for shelter, families will be able to access a variety of shelter areas within the school. Each classroom space in the building has a severe weather map showing areas that are safer if severe weather is in our area.

Ice Cream Social FYI

I scream, you scream, we all scream for the Ice Cream Social! This is a great party to say thank you to the students, King facility and the families for all their hard work :) As always, the party will be located behind the school on the blacktop area. Bracelets for the kids will be sold for $5 which includes one ice cream, access to the games with prizes, cakewalk, and the moonwalks. Additional tickets for ice cream will be sold for $2 and the 4th grade parents will be selling pizza (by the whole or slice), drinks and popcorn.

Of course, we couldn't have this wonderful event w/o the help of our parent volunteers. Your grade level representative should be in contact with you soon about volunteering to help out.Please consider donating a little of your time as there is a lot that goes into making this a successful event. We'd love to see you especially if you haven't been able to volunteer throughout the school year.

Please note that the games are listed by grade level and the ice cream, pizza/drinks and popcorn stands will be run by the 4th grade parents.

Do you want to dunk Mr. Karr at the Ice Cream Social?

This year my participation in the dunktank will occur for the first 30 minutes of the Ice Cream Social. However, you’ll need to think ahead if you hope to get me wet! Ill be offering throws this year to both parents and students in the following ways:
1. High bidders at the Silent Auction – you will be able to bid for three throws each at the Silent Auction. Remember: Proxy Bids will be accepted for those who can’t make it to school the evening of the Silent Auction.
2. Selected students who achieve a yet unannounced challenge during the month of May. Names of students who throw will be drawn in a raffle.

Dunk Tank
I've heard there will be a dunk tank at school tonight . . . so if you want to see your principal in it, you will need to be there at 6 PM. :-)

As a reminder, only fifth grade students are eligible to go in the dunk tank otherwise--and ONLY if they have signed permission from a parent/guardian.

Ice Cream Social - Friday, June 6, from 6 - 8 PM

The cost is $5/person for unlimited games and activities and includes one ice cream ticket. There will be a variety of games and activities. There will also be a Cake Walk. This is bound to be lots of fun!
Pizza will be available for $10/pizza (no preorder was necessary), drinks for $1, and additional ice cream tickets for $2.
Come honor Mrs. Jones tonight at the Ice Cream Social. Mrs. Jones is retiring at the end of the school year after nearly 40 years of teaching at King!

Ice Cream Social - Cake Walk Info

The annual Cake Walk will be held again this year at Friday's Ice Cream Social. Please Consider donating baked goods (homemade or store bought) for this fun event. Whole cakes, a dozen brownies or cookies, pies, anything with sprinkles and anything yummy are always big hits.

The Cake Walk is a "musical chairs" type event. Each winner selects their favorite baked good to take home and enjoy. Without your generous donations, we cannot run this event.

Drop off donations in the Teacher's Lounge at any time on Friday, June 6, or in the Multipurpose Room a half hour before the Ice Cream Social begins. Please attach a list of ingredients. If you donate store-bought items, feel free to leave them in their original containers.

Two Ways to Say Goodbye to Our Beloved Mrs. Jones!

Mrs. Cheryl Jones is retiring this June after nearly 40 years of devoted service to the King School Community. Help us honor her – and the unwavering talent, dedication and compassion she has given to our kids and families.

The King Ice Cream Social is Friday, June 6, from 6-8 pm.
It’s a perfect way to spend some time with Mrs. Jones,
enjoy some great memories and wish her well in her next adventure.

by purchasing books and music featuring African-American culture for King School.

Saying Farewell--and Thank You!

At the end of this school year, we’ll be saying farewell to a few of our finest teachers, representing 113 years of teaching experience! As you can imagine, this doesn't happen very often. Please consider saying your goodbye to these fine teachers at the annual MLK Ice Cream Social on June 1 from 6 - 8 PM.

In addition, if you'd like to make a contribution towards farewell gifts, please contact Mylinda Balint (jrb-myn at comcast.net) or Laurie Barnett (lcbarn at comcast.net).

Teachers leaving MLK at the end of the year:
• Our extraordinary media specialist, Marge Rutila. Mrs. Rutila is retiring and has been a dedicated teacher in Ann Arbor Public Schools for 37 years. She worked at Newport, Bader, Scarlett, Clague and Martin Luther King, spending 33 years at MLK—and the school has only been open for 37 years. In other words, Mrs. Rutila IS the MLK school media center. She has developed a space that is the hub of school activity and a model for other schools.

• One-half of the fantastic 5th grade team, Judy Pietila. Ms. Pietila is retiring and has been teaching for 32 years, spending 27 years in the Ann Arbor Public Schools with 22 of those years at MLK. She also spent two years at Bryant, one year at Eberwhite, and two years as a Language Arts Consultant at Lawton and Abbot. Ms. Pietila’s teaching in language arts and social studies in fifth grade have been fantastic.

• One of our dynamo 3rd grade teachers, Briita Hall. Mrs. Hall is retiring and has been a dedicated teacher in the Ann Arbor Public Schools since 1970 as a teacher with two years at Northside, one year at Clinton II (before it was named Bryant), 21 years at Pittsfield, and 12 years at MLK. Mrs. Hall’s thoughtful approach to teaching won’t soon be forgotten.

• Another dedicated and talented 5th grade teacher, Michelle Oliphant. Ms. Oliphant is taking a one-year leave of absence from the Ann Arbor Public Schools and will be teaching in London, England. She has spent 7 years at MLK after student teaching with Joyce Griffiths. We’ll hope to see her again somewhere down the road.

Please join me in saying farewell to these teachers at the MLK Ice Cream Social on Friday, June 1. I sincerely wish that we had more time with each of these dedicated, intelligent, caring teachers because of the excellence they represent. I’ll hope to see you Friday!
