Child Safety Seat Study

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute seeks subjects for a study of how people install child seats.  You must be age 18 or older and have a valid driver's license.  We need people with and without child seat experience.  The study will take up to 3 hours.  Pay is $40.  We will test people on UM North campus.  For more information, please contact Laura at lmalik@umich.edu or (734) 764-4722.

A "Tops" Box Tops Contest!

The box tops contest wrapped up last Thursday, and I am proud to say that we "topped" last years total by well over 1,000 box tops.  The contest will result in about $1,000 that we can use for next years programs and field trips.  Thanks to everyone and an extra big thanks to Mr. Petty's fourth graders who were the overall winners!!   They will be treated to a smoothie party.

To celebrate with the rest of school, we will have a special Popcorn Friday on Friday, June 4.   Every classroom contributed to our success this year, and we couldn't have done it without you!

Thanks, and remember, it's not too early to start saving box tops for next year's contest!

King PTO Positions Available - WE NEED YOU!

Take on a more active role in the King PTO...volunteer to be on the Executive Board for the 2010-2011 school year.  We are looking for two people to head up the King PTO...think about becoming the President or Vice President.  These positions must be filled so that the King PTO can continue to provide all of the wonderful activities, events, and more!  The King PTO can not run without these positions being filled.  See below for more specific job descriptions.
 
We are also looking for the following chairs for the 2010-2011 school year:  King Chronicle Newsletter Editor, Newcomers Network/Orientation Night, Green Baxter Court PTO Liaison, Healthy Students, King Clothing/Spirit Wear, Ann Arbor Parent Advisory Committee, Grade Level Representatives (all grades), & Teacher Appreciation Co-chair.  
 
Grab a friend & volunteer together!  All positions can have be chaired by one or two people (including President & VP).

President - Presides at all PTO general meetings, board meetings, & executive committee meetings.  Acts as liaison between the PTO & King School principal.  Appoints all members to committees created by the Board.  Serve as ex officio member on all committees.  Performs all other duties commonly ascribed to the office.
  
Vice President - Assists the President as directed & presides at meetings in absence of the President.  Oversees publication of student directory, first day packets, grade level representatives, volunteer coordination, nominating committee, goals committee, & revision by-laws.  This person will be the first candidate considered for the President the following year.

King Chronicle Newsletter Editor - Monthly publication about the happenings at King School

Newcomers Network/Orientation Night---Plan/Host orientation for new students on the Wednesday before school starts.  Serve as resource for new families at King.

Green Baxter Court PTO Liaison - Works with the director of CAN (Community Action Network) and Green Baxter Court to ensure that the needs of families living in GBC are met.

Healthy Students - Serve as liaison with AAPS to help promote the Wellness Policy that encourages students to eat healthy & exercise regularly.

King Clothing/Spirit Wear - Selects, processes orders, & distributes King School clothing/spirit wear.

AA Parent Advisory Committee - Serves as King representative for all students with IEPs or 504 plans, attends district-wide PAC meetings, facilitates communication between individuals, buildings, & district administration to create a better environment for the delivery of Special Education services throughout AAPS.

King Teacher Retirement Update

Four King teachers will be retiring this year:  Ms. Lake (3rd grade), Mrs. Shafie (4th grade), Dr. Michalik (5th grade) and Mr. Michalilk (Instrumental Music).  As a way of expressing gratitude for their many years of service, King PTO is collecting donations  for special projects that the teachers have personally selected.  You can send your donation with your child or place in the PTO box in the office.  Use form sent home in your child's backpack to designate your donation with one of the following choices: 

• Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation Project(Lake)     
  Collection of Books for School Library (Shafie)
• King School Student Inclusion Fund (S. Michalik) (fund for needy students to purchase spirit wear, pictures, yearbooks, etc...)
• Instrumental Music Enhancement Fund (K. Michalik)
• General fund to be distributed evenly among the above

Box Tops Update

With one week to go, 7887 box tops have been turned which equates to almost $800 for King School.

Some students have been asking which class has the most box tops -- with one week to go. Below are the current standings.

Overall, the fourth grade has the most box tops with 2294 box tops to their credit. Third grade is in second place with 1601.

As far as the class rankings go, Mr. Petty's class is in the lead with 1288. From there the classes with more than 400 box tops turned in are:

UM BEATS OSU - Thanks Again! Everyone Wears Maize and Blue to Ice Cream Social!

I want to again thank the King Community for their support at the
Silent Auction to keep me wearing Maize and Blue!

I have planned to wear my Maize and Blue the day of the Ice Cream
Social! This is a perfect time because not only can I wear my colors
but everyone else can too! Yes, that's right! Even the OSU fans in
the King Community can wear the colors of Michigan. It only seems
fitting since they didn't bid enough at the auction to put me in
Scarlet and Grey. Don't you agree?

2010-11 Kindergarten Update - One Half-Day Kindergarten - AM Section

April 26, 2010

Dear M. L. King Kindergarten Parent,

For the 2010-11 school year, King School will have one half-day kindergarten class which will be an AM session. Exact times for the section have not yet been set; however, last year the AM section met from 8:48 - 11:54.  

Some families requested the PM half-day kindergarten section for the 2010-11 school year, but that section will not be offered next year.

I also want to remind families that we have expanded the opportunities for a whole day kindergarten experience next year by offering two Extended Day Option (EDO) classes.  EDO classes meet in the AM for academics and the PM is tuition based day-care.  It is a nice option for working families who need to have children involved all day long.  As of this writing, there are eight spots open for EDO next year.  If you are interested (or you know a family who may be interested), please sign up at the Rec and Ed department.  Rec and Ed is located at 1515 S. Seventh.

Silent Auction Success!

The Silent Auction is now over, and it was a GREAT success and a GREAT time!  I'm not sure about how much money was actually raised for King School, but I will post it on the King website as soon as I know.

Thank you to all of the families who came tonight to spend their hard earned dollars to support our school.  You are a wonderfully supportive community!

While I'm writing this several moms and dads are sweeping floors, stacking tables, counting charge slips, organizing bid sheets, and doing everything else that needs to be done to finish a great Silent Auction fundraiser! A HUGE thanks goes to all of the volunteers.  This night couldn't have happened without your work and your selflessness.  As a community we owe you a huge debt of gratitude.  I want to personally thank Alena Stocking for all of her effort and organization of this event.  You've been wonderful!

I also want the King community to know how much the King staff appreciates the support of our PTO!  The funding the PTO gives towards King School classrooms and grade level field trips makes a HUGE positive impact each year.
