Math Olympiad Is Coming To King School
I am happy to announce that, with the support of PTO and Mr. Karr, King school will add another exciting academic enrichment program to benefit our students—the Math Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS). The MOEMS has been a major math contest for school children for 30 years. In the 2007-2008 year, 150,000 students participated in the program, representing all 50 US states and 25 countries. Its stated goals are:
• To stimulate enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics
• To introduce important Mathematical concepts
• To teach major strategies for problem solving
• To develop Mathematical flexibility in solving problems
• To strengthen Mathematical intuition
• To foster Mathematical creativity and ingenuity
• To provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges
Starting from the fall of 2009, King school will have a Math Olympiad Team for 4th and 5th graders. Everyone who wants the challenge is welcome, regardless of the level of math proficiency. We will hold after-school training sessions, where we will introduce problem-solving strategies, and work in small groups on word problems. All students on the team are strongly encouraged to participate in the contests, but they have the option to participate in the training only.
The contests will be held at King school once every month from November to March. In each contest, students will have 30 minutes to solve 5 word problems. All participants will receive Participation Certificates, high scorers will also receive gold, silver or bronze plaques and trophies. Nationwide, about half of the participants receive plaques or trophies.
Student sign-up and parent volunteer recruitment for the 2009-2010 year will begin in the fall. At that time, we will also hold an informational meeting for all interested parents.
The training and contests will run from October to March, roughly 3 times a month. The long time-span helps make math enrichment a continuous process. But it also requires commitment from students and parents. To give students a chance to try out the activity, we will run a math club in May and June, 2009. The club is open to all 3rd and 4th graders (who will be eligible for MOEMS in the fall). We will meet one hour a week after school for four weeks. This will be a good math enrichment opportunity; however, anyone who does not sign up for the club can still sign up for the Math Team in the fall.
The sign-up form for the math club in May and June will be available in April, as well as parent volunteer sign-up. We welcome all kinds of help from parents. Meanwhile, if you have questions, please email jingliu01@gmail.com or ljing@umich.edu .
Sincerely,
Jing Liu, PICO (Person In Charge of the Olympiad)
Raising a Son? Need Help? - Come To King 3/4 @! 7
Wednesday, March 4, 7:00-9:00 PM
King School Multi-Purpose Room
Speaker: Carole Lapidos, M.S.W.
Boys are growing up in a very confusing world. There are so many conflicting messages about what it means to be a boy and a man. If boys are taking their cues from the culture, then they are losing access to a very important part of themselves. Parents raising sons today face many challenges. This workshop will explore the topics that impact how boys see themselves and provide strategies for parents to stay connected to their sons.
Carole Lapidos is the co-founder and director of Raising Strong & Confident Daughters, a local organization dedicated to helping young children develop a strong sense of self-esteem. Registration is required. Please contact Laurie Galia by phone, 734-996-9946 or by email at lquain@umich.edu to register for this workshop by February 27. This workshop is being sponsored by the King School PTO.

Silent Auction - Our PTO's Biggest Fundraiser
With one month to go, we are not anywhere near that mark. And while we budgeted for a smaller auction this year, we need a concerted effort from everyone to make this event even half as successful as last year.
How Can You Help?
Offer to call 5 businesses who have supported us in the past and likely will donate something this year.
Offer to take on a leadership position--Needed positions are:
Volunteer coordinator--this person helps find/schedule volunteers for table set up Thurs night, display set up Friday, registration, check-out and clean up duties.
Food coordinator--this person plans and orders a menu, purchases plates/serving ware, and ensures vendors are paid.
Filing coordinator--on auction day this person leads a team to handle registrations, makes files for each registrant and sorts winning bid sheets. Terri Brodkey (previous chair) has perfected this and unfortunately will be out of town April 3rd.
Donation, Donations, Donations
Half of our monies raised were from internal donations. Some suggestions:
Offer a home cooked meal for delivery; Lessons?--music, skating, chess, language, painting; host a party--it's 80's night with big hair, Madonna, and shoulder pads; donate travel award miles or hotel reward points; offer your time share; gardeners can share perrenials; bakers share favorite desserts; host a children's party or event such as "learning magic" or "fun with math"; create a collection of your favorite wines; donate a themed basket such as Poke'mon or consider hosting a tailgate party some Saturday in Sept, Oct or Nov.
Unable to Volunteer or Donate?
Please send a check to King PTO with Silent Auction in the memo line. This fundraiser requires the support of every King family.
For information on how to help or to offer a donation, contact Lisa Kohn, Auction Chair.
lkohn@umich.edu or 734-417-7129.
Reading Month: Week 1 Challenge
March is Reading Month!
*Check out the family letter that came home with an optional activity sheet.
*Ask your kids what’s happening at school (something about a lion?)
*Watch these eNotes each week!
Week 1 Notes: Check it out! Kids and books at King
All King kids get to check out two books at a time (plus extras as assignments require)--and this month they get to have four! We don’t charge fines for late books, we just like to get them back when you are done with them. Sometimes a long book needs to be kept for 3 or 4 weeks, while in other cases kids get new books every few days.
Every few days? Yes, there are brief times each day when the library is open (like every day from starting bell till 9am) even if it isn’t your child’s weekly scheduled day. It has to be a good time for the teacher too, but oftentimes kids can scoot in to exchange books quite frequently.
Do you often forget to return books on “library day”? Kids can return their books ANY day, just slide them into the backpacks when you think of it. That way they’ll be all set to find and take out great new stuff when they visit the Media Center.
I welcome questions and comments anytime; email is best since I teach most of the day. Thanks for helping King grow happy readers!

Lights! Camera! King School Book Fairs!
This year we will be accepting MAGAZINES to donate to various places in the Ann Arbor area that are in need of magazines for their waiting areas. Educational & news magazines for both children & adults are especially needed.
A reminder to students who choose to make "Lights! Camera! Book Fairs!" posters. Posters are due Wednesday, March 4th. Flyers were sent home last Friday about making the posters. Those students who turn in a poster by March 4th will receive two additional coupons for free used books from the King School Used Book Fair.
The King School Scholastic & Used Book Fairs will be held on March 19 - 20! Do you have time to help collect & sort used books (mornings during the collection) or with the book fairs (3/18 afternoon times especially needed), 3/19 (8:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. shifts available), or 3/20 (8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.)? International Night Procedures
The PTO's Annual International Night will begin at 6:30 on February 5! This is one of the premier events each year at MLK. I hope to see you there! Because this event is typically attended by over 800 people, it is important to review the following information:
1. Evening activities at King are family events. Parents and guardians are responsible for the close supervision of their children. Children cannot attend without a supervising adult.
2. Be aware of the evening safety procedures at MLK--including NO PARKING IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING.
Parking
Due to the limited availability of parking at King, parents should plan to park in the neighborhood during all evening events at King.
There is NO PARKING in front of the school, by the fire hydrant, or on the left-hand side of the front circular drive.
Reason: The front drive is a fire lane and must be kept accessible for emergency vehicles. The fire hydrant area must also be kept clear.
Drop Off/Pick Up
The front entrance will be available for drop off and pick up ONLY. AT NO TIME SHOULD PARKING OCCUR IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL.
Emergency Exits
Front EntranceIf you have any questions, please call the school office. We'll be happy to help.

International Night at MLK School - 2/5 @ 6:30!
INTERNATIONAL NIGHT is here!
THIS Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, 6:30-8:30 pm
Sharing Cultures. Creating Bridges.
Enjoy an international potluck of amazing foods from around the world and Ann Arbor! Take a tour around the world by strolling through King School’s hallways. Watch our King School students come together to celebrate our diversity by performing Israeli Folkdance, Spanish Song, Japanese Geisha dance, Bolivian dance, Japanese Karate, African American Gospel Music, Korean Tae Kwon Do, American Hip-Hop, Irish dance, Indian Bollywood dance, Dutch songs, Thai dance, Chinese Yo-Yo, more!
Schedule:
6:30-7:30 International Potluck (don’t be late!)
7:00-8:30 Student Performances (Performances will be simulcast into the gym.)
Please bring a dish to pass (enough to feed 18 people!—lots of hungry grandmas)
With serving utensil
Without nuts or peanuts please!
Label with name of dish, country of origin, and ingredients
Please dress in heritage clothing
NOTES: Parents must be responsible for and with their children at ALL times. Please remind children no running wild through the hallways and to be respectful during performances. Also, we have more students performing this year than ever before! Please be prompt, nice, and patient as it will be hot, noisy, crowded, chaotic, FUN, and we may run a little late. If your child cannot eat when excited, please feed before you come (or bring a healthy snack). Please also remember to allow for ample time to find parking and NO PARKING on either side of the circular drive.
PLEASE PLAN AHEAD TO AVOID GRUMPINESS.
If you would like to volunteer to help with the feast, contact Lisa Kohn NOW at lkohn@umich.edu.
If you have a country poster you would like to post, contact Padma Anupindi at p_anupindi@hotmail.com.
Performers’ parents: If your child is performing, please feed and dress and do hair and makeup at home before you come, know where and when to meet your group leaders, and bring a healthy snack for afterwards. Prepare everything you need the night before to avoid last minute chaos.
Performance leaders: Make sure your groups practice entering the stage (ramp side), bowing, and exiting the stage (parking lot side). Must be fast! Have 1-2 parents assigned/stationed to help get kids on stage (ramp side) and off stage (parking lot side), and have a plan about where and when to meet before and afterwards. Afterwards is important to return them to their parents. Groups should report to the stage two acts before theirs. Remind children to be quiet and courteous and not wild while waiting in the wings. Get your music on CD to Mrs. Vanek NOW!
NOW LET’S HAVE SOME FUN!
Sponsored by the King PTO.

Raising a Daughter? Need Help?
Thursday, February 19, 7:00-9:00 PM
King School Multi-Purpose Room
Speaker: Carole Lapidos, M.S.W.
Every parent wants to raise his or her daughter to be strong and self-confident. This workshop will help parents understand the obstacles that often get in the way of girls reaching their full potential. We will explore ways our daughters are influenced by mainstream culture and how to protect our daughters from some of the toxic messages. Having strategies to help strengthen the connection between daughters and parents is the key to helping girls stay strong.
Carole Lapidos is the co-founder and director of Raising Strong & Confident Daughters, a local organization dedicated to helping young children develop a strong sense of self-esteem. Registration is required. Please contact Laurie Galia by phone, 734-996-9946 or by email at lquain@umich.edu to register for this workshop by February 13. This workshop is being sponsored by the King School PTO.

Jump Rope For Heart - 2/13
In case you didn't know (from the Jump Rope For Heart website):
Jump Rope For Heart is a national educational fund-raising program that is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).
While participating at King, this program engages our students in a physical activity (jumping rope) with an option for raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research. Students can ask friends and family for donations if parents feel it is OK. Either way, all students participate in physical fitness and better understand the value of community service.
This year's event will take place on February 13! I can't wait to see everyone jumping!

--Hosting: To receive and help place the food, trash patrol, etc. 5:30-7:30
--Clean up: 7:30-9:30
We're expecting to feed 1000 people--we need all hands to make the feast portion go smoothly. If you want to be a part but don't know what to do, help with the feast. It's easy and flexible and day-of. And yes of course you can take a (short) break to go see your kids perform.
Feast, Feast, Feast, Feast
A delicious part of King School's International Night is the potluck or "Feast". Attendees are to bring a dish from their cultural heritage that will serve 18 people (large quantities needed). Your dish can be an appetizer, salad, noodles, main course, dessert or any other culinary endeavor. You may recall that each dish must have a label card: name, ethnic region and boxes checked for any of the 12 common food allergies. NO NUTS, PLEASE.
In order to save copying costs, food label cards will NOT go home in student folders. You can pick up cards ahead of time in the school office and there will be food cards available on International Night, February 5th. Please label any dishes or serving ware that you would like to keep.
Food lines will open at 6:30 pm and performers will have first priority. Beverages include water (free from the PTO thermos) or juice boxes (price to be determined). Food lovers this is your night!
We anticipate over 600 diners, so anyone willing to volunteer for a 30 minute job, please contact Lisa Kohn: lkohn@umich.edu

Safeties NOT On Duty When Windchill Is ≤0 °F
With the very cold weather upon us, I'd like to remind you that safeties are not on duty during inclement weather. This would mean when the wind chill is below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Checking out the various weather websites would be recommended to determine the exact wind chill in Ann Arbor. When spring finally arrives, thunder/lightning storms would also prevent safeties from being on duty. So, please keep this in mind when your child goes to school or when he/she goes home. A family plan on how your child would cross streets in case of future weather conditions is advised.
Sincerely,
Tom Clarkson
Safety Patrol Coordinator
Drop-off Procedures Today
1. Be patient, go slowly.
2. It is too cold to wait outside. Instruct your child to walk inside upon drop off and wait on the rugs inside the door until the bell rings.
3. If you are parking on Waldenwood, please park at least 20 feet away from the entrance or exit to the front drive. This will help to alleviate congestion and will keep traffic flowing.
Thanks.
Kevin

Drop-off and Pick-Up - Cold Weather Update
Despite our relative warmth inside the school, the temperatures outside have plummeted (obviously) and caused some to think about drop-off/pick-up safety and/or whether or not school can be canceled because it is too cold.
First, safety needs to be on our minds at all times during drop-off and pick-up at King. As a community we have done a GREAT JOB of following the drop-off/pick-up policy; however, temperatures of 5 °F and lower have caused almost twice as many cars at King in the morning than on other days. To help, please do the following if you drop-off and/or pick-up at King in the next 8 - 10 weeks:
- Above all else, you'll need to be patient while dropping-off or picking-up. With as many cars as we have in front right now, it is going to take a bit longer to get in and out. If your child is older and/or able, you might consider dropping them off a block or so away from school letting them walk to school. Thank you for your cooperation.
- Follow the drop-off/pick-up policy. This IS a requirement. From some of what I saw happening over the last few days in the drop-off zone (writing a note to child's teacher, backing up, not pulling forward as far as possible, dropping a child off from the left-hand lane), it looks like there are some new parents to the drop-off/pick-up zone. Please read the policy and follow it.
- Emphasize after-school procedures with your child. Make sure your child knows where they are going after school (bus, KingCare, walking, picked up).
I hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Kevin

10 Myths About Learning To Write
Whether you came to the sessions or not, I thought King parents might be interested in the piece below, which I found in an online newsletter I receive. While the enumerated list is interesting, the explanations of each item really struck me as helpful and clarifying. I encourage you to print this, put it on your refrigerator (or somewhere else you will see it as time goes by), and read it from time to time.
10 Myths about Learning to Write
from the National Council of Teachers of English
Learning to write IS difficult. But sometimes people get discouraged for the wrong reasons. They fall into the trap of believing things about writing that just aren't true.
Members of the National Council of Teachers of English want to set the record straight with this list of myths about learning to write.
1. Kids hate to write.
It's sad but true that some kids come to hate writing through bad experiences. Yet no one is born hating to write. For instance, kids love to tell stories—their own stories—from events at school, other kids, TV, daydreams, and more. When kids begin by writing their own stories, they learn to love to write.
2. Real writers get it right the first time.
Most of us can't even write a grocery list without making some changes. Even famous authors, poets, and journalists have to produce a few rough drafts before arriving at their best work. The important thing is to keep writing until you've said what you mean.
3. Kids have nothing interesting to say.
Are you kidding? Anyone who's spent any time around kids knows they're full of lively and unique ideas about the world around them. And they always seem to find things to tell their friends. If we just give kids chances to write down their ideas, we’ll be amazed with what they come up with.
4. You have to know what you are going to say before you begin writing.
The funny thing about writing is that it actually helps you think. Many writers don’t discover exactly what they’re trying to say until after they’ve written for pages. Writing not only helps kids think deeply, but it helps them find out what they already know—not just in English class but in everything from math to biology to music.
5. If you can’t spell, you can’t write.
Oh, yes you can! Good writers first write all their thoughts and ideas. Then they revise, revise, revise until they’re satisfied they’ve said what they want to say. Then—and only then—is it time to edit for spelling and other rules such as capitalization, punctuation, and word usage.
6. Writing is built one sentence at a time.
Writing is made up of words and sentences but it’s actually written first as chunks of ideas. Kids don’t need to master the sentence before they go on to the paragraph. They just need to start writing any way they can—revising is for later.
7. Only great writers can be creative.
Baloney! Different types of writing—including creative writing like poems and plays—have different challenges, but there's no law that says kids have to learn one type first. What's important is that kids choose the best type of writing for what they want to say—whether a poem, a letter, or a report.
8. Good writers work alone.
There's probably a good writer somewhere who likes to write in a quiet closet. But most writers today are people who work in busy offices or classrooms, and who write with frequent input from their coworkers and peers. Young writers learn even more when they are part of a "community" of others—sharing ideas, asking questions, and revising their writing.
9. You can spot a good writer at a glance.
There is no gene for writing! Good writers don't all look the same, they don’t all learn the same, and they don't all use the same methods. Some writers jot a lot of notes before starting to write; others jump right in; some writers outline; some doodle in the margins while they think; some write best to music; some write best sitting under a tree. The point is that all writers are individuals and need to discover what works best for them.
10. Poor marks make good writers.
A student paper dripping with blood-red marks on every line does not a better writer make. Kids do learn best when they get feedback, but harsh grading isn’t the answer. Writers improve by first learning what parts they wrote well and then focusing on what parts still need work.

Disability Awareness Workshop Volunteers Needed
This workshop was developed by parents in the Rochester Community Schools Special Education Parent Advisory Committee in 1998. It has now expanded to many schools in Oakland County. In the Ann Arbor Public Schools, the workshop was first held at Logan Elementary School in 2005. In subsequent years, this increased to 4 buildings (2006), 7 (2007, when King was added), 11 (2008) and again 11 elementary schools for 2009, the workshop's fifth year in Ann Arbor.
Please consider volunteering to help with the workshop. We need 20 volunteers in the morning from approximately 8:30 am until 11:50 am, when the students have their lunch break. You are welcome to remain for the rest of the program (12:45 pm to dismissal). Past experience proves that this is a fun and meaningful experience for all of our children as well as the volunteers.
Volunteers will be trained to oversee students as they rotate through nine different stations, including:
Physical Impairment Centers: Wheelchairs; Walkers; and Fine Motor Activities
Vision, Hearing and Speech Stations: Hearing & Speech; Vision; and Learning Disabilities
Accessibility Checklist (students work in teams to complete a checklist that requires some measuring and math computations)
Thank you for contributing to the success of the workshop. Please contact me with any questions.

MLK Building Renovations Update
Some of the renovations have taken place already including installing the infrastructure for updated electrical service and wireless Internet. In addition, over the winter break, six classrooms will have new floors installed and corridor ceiling tiles will be replaced (which are original from 1969 I believe). I am hopeful that new carpet will be installed in the music room as well.
I continue to take suggestions for "wish list" items which may be purchased if there is"extra" bond money. Here is the complete "wish list" as of today:
- Resurface asphalt areas in front of school and parking lot
- Ident-A-Kid visitor check-in system technology package (computer, printer, webcam) – building techs do not support this direction.
- Ceiling mount existing projectors in art room, computer lab, in media center and in office conference room—NOT in music room
- Update signage around building - parking lot entrance?
- Signage at entrance of front drive making it clear where drop off occurs
- Interior signage
- Update cosmetics of parking lot entrance to make it look like an entrance (sign, planter)
- Can a schematic be provided?
- Is there a way to make it look more organic, less industrial
- New classroom furniture – tables, chairs
- Elmo projectors for all classrooms
- Sink in MP room for handwashing
- Smart/Active boards in each classrooom
- Replace hallway flooring, add pattern
- Replace flooring in classroom storage areas
- Carpet in the media center
- Carpet in teacher’s lounge
- Wireless or data jack in MP Room
- Ceiling tile replacement in media center.
- Upgrade sink and sink cabinet in the staff lounge
- Don’t replace white boards in rooms where they already exist
- Upgrade sink and sink cabinet in the staff lounge
- Interior signage
- Move classroom sinks closer to the middle of the counter space
- New toilet if office bathroom
- Update older drinking fountain across from office
- Cabinet in office for medication
- Stools for the computer lab
- spring/winter rodent problem
- install PA system in RI and resource room
- new door from gym to MP room
- Paint inside and outside of school
- Push-plate on entry door
- Handicapped push plate for main entrance door(s)
- Clean outlet pipe for catch basin in back playground
- Control over our own heat
- Bump out our cubbies to make our rooms larger and then doors leading from each classroom straight outside.
- Ceiling tiles in music room
- Remove old TV in music room
Weather and SNOWMAN HOLIDAY GIVING UPDATE
If this is not possible, we'll work it out one way or another . . . email me or call school today and I will make a plan with you about what to do. :-)
On behalf of the King PTO and the King staff, I am deeply thankful for the generosity our community shows in helping others. The snowman gifts are an excellent example of how King School has been a community leader in this area. I personally know our example is recognized by the Ann Arbor Educational Foundation and members of other area PTOs have discussed how to follow our example. Nice job!
As for the weather and school closings, any decisions about school cancellations will be posted on the school website. I'll do my best to send a community email quickly also. In addition, the information I've shared previously about school closings should still be helpful.
Sincerely,
Kevin

The fifth grade team shares a book together. Miss Harris, one of the newest teachers to King enjoys reading to the kids.
Ms. Shah reads a picture book to the kids.
Ms. Lake and Miss Guttman
The kids loved the books!
Mrs. Rutila was the media specialist at MLK School for 34 years before retiring just two years ago. It was great to see her again.
Mrs. Gracey and daughter: reading and having fun together
Mrs. O'Keefe, our new media specialist at King. We're glad she is with us.
Mrs. Jones, who retired from King just last year after teaching here for 36 years. She still draws a big crowd!

King International Night Preparations Underway
International Night is an incredible evening of pride and celebration for the King School Community. We begin with an International Potluck of delectable dishes from around the world. Then we have a Showcase of Student Performances (325 students last year!) such as Arabic Debkeh Dance, Korean Tae Kwon Do, Bolivian Dance, Dutch song, Thai dulcimer, American Hip-Hop, Indian bhangra dance, Chinese fan dance, and more! We also decorate the hallways with informational Country Displays and art projects for a World Tour. We also try to help with International Crafts during lunchtime enrichment that week. We are also always open to new innovative ideas!
We need a Queen of the Feast (or two) to organize the potluck, and a tech crew for the simulcast.
Due to a conflict with Clague's 7th grade band concert, which affects many of our families, King's International Night will be moved one week to Thursday, February 5, same time 6:30-8:30pm. Mark it on your calendars now and tell your friends!
We also need 300 red envelopes in case anyone is headed for Taiwan or China over break.

PTO Bylaws Update - PLEASE READ
To paraphrase the changes, non-profits are now required to have a minimum of 3 DIRECTORS. "Michigan nonprofit corporations are required in existence on July 16, 2008, must have a board existing of three or more directors by January 16, 2009." "...If the corporation's bylaws fix the size of the board at less than three directors, the bylaws will need to be amended." Wording in the bylaws like President and VP don't count. They must be classified as Directors.
Additionally, the King PTO Exec Board wanted to make a change to the bylaws that allows the President to appoint a signee for a back-up role to the Treasurer.
The link to the new bylaws is below. We will be voting on their acceptance at the next PTO General Meeting which will be held on Tuesday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the King School Library.
